How does an artist channel not only what it is they are seeing but also how they are seeing it?  A new exhibit at the Victory Hall Drawing Rooms titled “Just Looking – Art and the Act of Seeing” probes the answer to this profound question.  This introspective exhibition of works in drawing, painting and photography delves into the concept of looking and seeing through the eyes of the artist. The emphasis on this collaboration of artwork is on how the artist sees over the importance of the object itself. Each of these artists has created bodies of work concerned with the experience of seeing; elements of observation, distortion, reflection, movement and chance are all engaged to not only create their imagery but to bring the viewer into their world while being apart of the overall experience. Through these works, the viewer can share in the perspective of the artists and manufacture discoveries of their own.

Drawing Rooms, which serves as a vital catalyst for the arts, is a contemporary art gallery for drawing, painting, and print located in the electrifying downtown area of Jersey City. Drawing Rooms features continually developing exhibitions of sensational new works by artists in the NY/NJ area. A former convent that has been magically transformed into an arts space, Drawing Rooms boasts ten rooms of artist exhibition spaces, project rooms, artist’s books and an inviting teashop.

Drawing Rooms is the latest project run by Victory Hall, Inc., a 501c3 non-profit organization that engages with visual arts and artists by producing exhibits, arts education, and multimedia projects in museums, public buildings and outdoor spaces. Victory Hall, Inc. also operates Victory Hall Press, a small book publisher of images by current artists working in drawing, photography, painting and print.  Another highlight added to the mix is the Rainbow Thursdays Program, a community-based arts education program that connects developmentally disabled adults with professional artists who provide them with materials and training to encourage expression through art.

The following nine artists will exhibit their work in this show as solo exhibitions in nine rooms:

Agnes de Bethune: Art in America Painting Series

Edward Fausty: At Home in the Woods Photographs

James Pustorino: Place in Space Drawings

Janet Tsakis: Self-Portrait Drawing

Jennifer Krause Chapeau: Road Series Paintings
